Decluttering vs. Organizing

A common mistake people make when first tackling their clutter problem is that they go out and buy a bunch of storage containers to start organizing. Containers and boxes and baskets and organizing gizmos and so on. The problem with this is that it doesn’t solve your problem. You’re not getting rid of the clutter, you’re just organizing it, hiding it, and making it look slightly better than it did before. However! This is not permanent. If you get rid of something, it’s gone from your house for good. If you organize it, you’ve now just made the decision to add it to the list of something to maintain, because you KNOW it’s not going to stay in that spot.

Now, I’m not saying organizing is bad, it certainly isn’t! But decluttering before you organize is very important. If you do it the other way around, you don’t know how many or what kind of storage containers you’re going to need. Try to get rid of as much as you can before you organize what’s left.

Happy Decluttering!

  1. LOL! i realized a long time ago that the biggest part of my clutter problem isn’t my personal things and such, but all my beloved organizers! Everything from day planners; binders of every ring size & style; plastic baskets; decorative baskets; plastic boxes; decorative boxes; utility office cardboard filing boxes; desktop accessories; totebags; purses; pieces of luggage; zip bags of every size, shape, color, fabric ever known to mankind; right up to the two – yes, two – storage units i pay rent on to store a lot of it in!
And believe it or not these very things are THE HARDEST things for me to part with even though they are made to help me get organized and tidy, THEY are all over the place causing just the opposite.
I can easily de-own clothes, dishes, even give away money, but it hurts the most to let go of my beloved organizers. …. yeah weird … i know!
If i got rid of them all, i could probably fit what i have left over into the back of my van! 🙂

    • Ah! We all have one area that is especially hard to get rid of. For some it may be clothes or small kitchen appliances, for you… Organizing tools!
